Implicates and Prime Implicates in Random 3-SAT

چکیده
It has been observed previously that Random 3SAT exhibits a phase transition at a critical ratio of constraints to variables, where the average frequency of satissability falls abruptly from near 1 to near 0. In this paper we look beyond satissability to implicates and prime implicates of non-zero length and show experimentally that, for any given length, these exhibit their own phase transitions. All of these phase transitions appear to share the same critical point as the well-known satissability phase transition. We also nd a rich, regular 1 pattern, in which phase transitions for longer implicates or prime implicates are less steep at a given problem size and all the phase transitions sharpen with increasing problem size. Implicates correspond in a one-to-one way to nogoods, and prime implicates correspond similarly to minimal nogoods. Knowledge about these phase transitions helps us to understand more about the behavior of search algorithms and knowledge compilation approaches in the context of Random 3SAT.

The Maximum Length of Prime Implicates for Instances of 3-SAT
Schrag and Crawford ( 1996) present strong experimental evidence that the occurrence of prime implicates of varying lengths in random instances of 3-SAT exhibits behaviour similar to the wellknown phase transition phenomenon associated with satisfiability. Thus, as the ratio of number of clauses (m) to number of propositional variables (n) increases, random instances of 3-SAT progress from form...
متن کاملPrime Compilation of Non-Clausal Formulae
Formula compilation by generation of prime implicates or implicants finds a wide range of applications in AI. Recent work on formula compilation by prime implicate/implicant generation often assumes a Conjunctive/Disjunctive Normal Form (CNF/DNF) representation. However, in many settings propositional formulae are naturally expressed in non-clausal form. Despite a large body of work on compilat...
متن کاملComputing Theory Prime Implicates in Modal Logic
The algorithm to compute theory prime implicates, a generalization of prime implicates, in propositional logic has been suggested in [16]. In this paper we have extended that algorithm to compute theory prime implicates of a knowledge base X with respect to another knowledge base Y using [2], where Y is a propositional knowledge base and X |= Y , in modal system T and we have also proved its co...
متن کاملTri-Based Set Operations and Selective Computation of Prime Implicates
A more efficient version of the prime implicate algorithm introduced in [12] that reduces the use of subsumption is presented. The algorithm is shown to be easily tuned to produce restricted sets of prime implicates. Experiments that illustrate these improvements are described.
متن کاملTheory Prime Implicates of First Order Formulas
We provide a knowledge compilation technique which deals with the computational intractability of first order reasoning problems. The notion of prime implicates is extended to theory prime implicates in first order case. We provide an algorithm to compute the theory prime implicates of a knowledge base X with respect to a knowledge base Y where both X and Y are assumed to be in Skolem Conjuncti...
